Projecting Optimism at the Alpine Theater

Updated: Oct 26, 2020

Last week the BID staff met with Alpine Cinema owner, Nick Nicolaou, and got a sneak peek of the extensive renovations underway. Celebrating its 99th birthday this year, the Alpine is the oldest operating movie theater in NYC.  With the pandemic closing theaters across the city and beyond, Nick decided now was as good a time as any to double down on his commitment to preserving this community institution.

New air filtration systems in each of the eight theaters will provide a safer indoor environment for viewers once the theater reopens.  An extensive renovation of the lobby will feature restored historic crown molding and architectural embellishments. A mix of new lighting fixtures and classic chandeliers will illuminate the entrance and hallways.  New sound paneling will improve the sonic experience within the theaters.  And a refurbished concession counter will entice movie goers with the usual offerings of popcorn, candy and soft drinks.  This is only some of the work being completed in preparation for an eventual reopening.

Nick is no spring chicken when it comes to running movie theaters.  He has been in the theater business for decades and owns two more theaters in Queens.  Nick himself is the subject of a documentary film portraying his journey as an independent theater operator since the 1970’s.  You can watch a trailer of Abel Ferrara’s, The Projectionist here.

There is no one more passionate about movies theaters than Nick.  He believes the theater is an integral part of the neighborhood and has been responsible for happy family memories spanning multiple generations. Nick says, “Our neighborhoods matter and we should fight for them.” Watch our video montage and hear Nick talk about his passion for the Alpine. The video will also be featured during our annual meeting. Click here to learn more and RSVP.
